The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood (Fireside Book Review)

I just completed a very motivational book, The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood. It’s part of the Sears Parenting Library and focuses on how you can get your family on a healthy nutritional track and why you need to do so.

I called this book “very motivational” and that’s because after reading only the first third of the book, I wondered, “Why do I even buy junk food?” Then, I completed the rest of the book, made a shopping list, went to the store and filled the kitchen with brain healthy foods. And, the motivation really lasted this time. . .until this past Tuesday night (Halloween). Now, I don’t even want to walk in my pantry because the candy starts calling my name!! I’m hoping that if I give the kids a few grapes with the candy things will balance out.

Okay, so back to the book, it’s focused on kids and provides great school lunch box ideas, healthy snacks, “brain” foods, etc. But, it all applies to adults too. One of my kid’s favorite new “healthy lunch” that was inspired from the book is turkey and cheddar wheat pita sandwiches with guacamole. They asked for those two days in a row!

To get you started, here are some of the best snack ideas from the Super Snack List (found on page 167 of the book):

  • apple slices dipped in peanut butter
  • string cheese and a piece of fruit
  • hard-boiled egg
  • homemade oatmeal-raisin cookies (the books provides a recipe)
  • fruit-and-yogurt smoothie
  • blueberries in yogurt (the frozen blueberries work great for this)
  • pita bread with hummus

Check out the book for more snacks and many, many more great ideas and watch upcoming SharpMom Tips of the Week for more inspirational ideas from the book.
