Organizing Small Spaces

Downsizing to our temporary housing has been challenging. We cut our square footage in half, lost our office, our game room and a few other rooms. But, I have the say the worst part is the downsized closets (especially the master closet).

Let me give you a visual: my husband and I can’t both fit in our closet at the same time. It’s so tiny. It would be tiny if only my clothes were in it and we’re sharing it! So, I’ve learned a few tricks to help make the most of my very tight space.

  • Sort your clothing: I’m usually running around with my kids, so my favorite casual clothes and jeans are all in the front of the closet within easy reach. In fact, I can get to a few key pieces without even entering the closet. My nicer clothes for church, evening outings, etc. are further back, since I don’t have to get to them as often.
  • Simplify your accessories: I pulled out the shoes, belts and purses I use most and then boxed the rest up on the shelves.
  • Under bed storage cartons: These are great and really easy to get to. I bought a long “sweater” container and the lid flips up from both ends. I can easily store about 12 sweaters in it (six on each side).
  • Steal closet space from your children!: I had to “borrow” my daughter’s top rod for my Summer clothes. (She can’t reach it anyways!)

Speaking of children’s closets, I actually took the opposite approach in my son’s closet. Since he doesn’t select his own clothes each day, I used the upper rods for all his clothes, which gave us lots of floor space for toys, since we lost our gameroom!

Whenever I get really claustrophobic, I just go visit my new house (which is under construction) and stand in my soon to be closet. What a joy it’s going to be! I’ll probably have to buy new clothes just to fill it up!
