Organize Those Spices (Tip of the Week)

spicesI recently did a Fireside book review on The Frantic Woman’s Guide to Feeding Family and Friends. There were some great kitchen and cooking tips in the book. They all couldn’t make it into the review, so I saved a few for Tip of the Week.

Author Mary Jo Rulnick gave a great tip on how to organize all those darn spice jars. She suggests keeping them all in a clear storage container the size of a shoe box. After loading all those little guys into the container, label the lid of each jar (if not already labeled) with a permanent marker, so you can easily spot what you are looking for. Some people that cook a lot, might even want two containers, one for the more commonly used spices and another for the less frequently used ones.

I think this is a great idea. It’s so much easier to grab the entire container than trying to rummage through all the jars on a cabinet shelf. Of course, many people use spice racks, but I find they never include ALL the spices you need.
