Know Your Carbs (Tip of the Week)
I’ve never been a fan of the no-carb diets and that’s because not all carbs are bad for you. In fact, some carbs, like fruits, are very good for you.
Last week, I told you about a great nutritional book I read called, The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood. I learned a lot of great tips from this book, so I wanted to share a few more with you in the coming weeks. Here’s the first one:
“Feed your family a good-carb diet, not a low-carb diet.”
Healthy Carbs: Contain Fiber and Protein
- fruits
- legumes
- nut butters
- soy foods
- veggies
- whole grains
- yogurt
Junky Carbs: Contain Little or No Fiber or Protein
- candy
- cereals with fewer than 3 grams of protein and fiber
- chips
- desserts
- high-fructose corn syrup
- sweetened beverages
- white bread and pasta
A friend of mine told me that if you just shop the perimeter of the grocery store, you’ll make healthy choices. Think about what’s on the perimeter, dairy, meats, fruits, veggies, nuts and whole grain breads (no candy, cookies or crackers). Give it a try!
