How to Hang a Picture (Tip of the Week)

I’m seeking decorating inspiration since we are getting ready to move into a new home. Two of my girlfriends recommended a decorating magazine that I’d never read before called Domino. I really enjoyed reading it… lots of good inspiration and a good mix of furniture styles that I liked! I also picked up a great tip from the magazine, which is now our Tip of the Week.

When I’m hanging pictures, I usually just have someone hold them up for me and then I go with my gut! I try not to pull out the pencil and tape measure. That seems to get really complicated. But, hanging collections of pictures is challenging. I worry that the lowest one is too low and the top one is too high, etc. So, I loved the picture hanging tip that I picked up from Domino in an article called, “Three Ways to Hang Art,” from the April 2007 publication.

Here’s the tip:

“On furnitureless walls, set the top of the lowest picture 58 inches above the floor. When there’s furniture involved, set the bottom of the lowest picture six to eight inches above the tallest piece. When adding more pictures, leaving two inches or more between frames on all sides is a good rule of thumb.”

I have a black and white collection of photos of my children hanging on a wall without furniture. I did a quick check last night and was pleased to learn that I did a pretty good job. Mine were 57 inches above the floor. I guess I eyeballed it pretty well! I hope this tip saves you some time when you go to hang your next picture!
