The Memory Keeper’s Daughter (Book Review)

May 2, 2007

book coverA while back, I was at Target shopping for a good book and this sweet woman (a fellow shopper) walked up to me and asked if she could give me a recommendation on a book. This has never happened to me before, but I certainly welcomed her input.

She suggested that I read The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards. She told me that it was the best book she’d ever read in her life. And, that every time she sees it at the store she wishes she could buy it and read it again for the first time.

Wow, that was a pretty powerful recommendation. I have books that I feel that way about, so I was very excited to potentially discover something really great.

I’ve been so busy lately it’s hard to find time to read, but finally, this past weekend, I completed The Memory Keeper’s Daughter and I can now officially review it for the SharpMoms! Read more

Do What You Are (Book Review)

March 23, 2007

book jacketAre you dissatisfied with your current career? Are you interested in going back to work, but unsure what you want to do? Well, maybe you should Do What You Are.

Over the weekend, I read a great book that was given to me called Do What You Are, by Paul D. Tieger and Barbara Barron. It claims that it will enable you to, “discover the perfect career for you through the secrets of personality type.”

The book starts off by explaining the four dimensions of personality type:

  • Extraversion vs. Introversion
  • Sensing vs. Intuition
  • Thinking vs. Feeling
  • Judging vs. Perceiving

You read through several pages that explain each of these in detail and you make note of which ones suit you best. Ultimately, you end up with a four letter code (there are 16 possible combinations) that defines your personality. Then you can read all about yourself. How you work with others, how you handle conflict, how you are motivated and ultimately, the best suited careers for your personality. My husband and I both worked through the exercises to determine our “personality category” and then we just laughed when we read about ourselves, because it was so true!

If you are a manager of people, this would be a great way to get to know your team better and to understand how to motivate and work with different types of people.

It was a lot of fun and will help you understand yourself better!

book jacketI just realized that today is the first day of Spring! I love the start of Spring, love the cool 70 degree days, love the clothes, love the blooming flowers, but somehow the Fireside Book Reviews just don’t seem right anymore! So, I’m thinking this is a good opportunity to do a Fireside Book Review Wrap-Up.

Here are the books SharpMom read and reviewed over the Winter:

And here’s a quick wrap-up/review:

  • The book I learned the most from: The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood
  • The book that caught me by surprise: You’re Not the Boss of Me
  • My overall favorites: Piece of Work and The Undomestic Goddess
