Dieting? Watch out for these Fake Diet Foods
January 25, 2007
Trying to diet or just eat better? Be sure to read your labels. A lot of products that are claiming to be lite, lo-cal or diet really aren’t healthy at all. I’ve also noticed that you really have to watch out for whole grain or wheat claims. If the ingredient list starts with “enriched…” it isn’t really whole grain.
Hungry Girl gives a great list of foods to beware of in her article “Little Light Lies. . .”
- Cold Stone Creamery Cake Batter Light Ice Cream (51 carbs!)
- Litehouse Lite Honey Dijon Vinaigrette Dressing (13 grams of fat!)
- Arby’s Market Fresh Santa Fe Salad (41 grams of carbs!)
- Haagen-Dazs Cookie Dough Lite Ice Cream (30 grams of sugar!)
- Ruby Tuesday Smart Eating Chicken Portabella (519 calories!)
- Buitoni Light Alfredo Sauce (6 grams of fat!)
- Smoothie King Slim-N-Trim Strawberry Smoothie (79 grams of carbs!!!!!)
Okay, who wouldn’t diet non-stop if all these foods were really healthy. They just sounds too good to be true and turns out, they are!
What’s Your Fitness Program? (Poll Results)
November 13, 2006
The votes are in, and well, it looks like most of us (over half in fact) enjoy the less strenuous workouts like walking, yoga and pilates.
I’ve been reading a lot of information lately that claims these workouts are really better for us anyways. They are less stressful on the joints and provide us with long, lean muscles and flexibility. Jennifer Aniston says she does yoga several times a week and who doesn’t want to look like her?
For your reference, here are the SharpMom results:
- Walking: 33.3%
- Yoga/Pilates: 28.6%
- Jogging/Running: 19%
- Cardio Classes: 4.8%
- Healthy Eating: 4.8%
- Weight Lifting: 0%
And, there were also 9.5% of you that don’t have a work out program.
Thanks for your votes and watch out for a new poll later this week.
Know Your Carbs (Tip of the Week)
November 6, 2006
I’ve never been a fan of the no-carb diets and that’s because not all carbs are bad for you. In fact, some carbs, like fruits, are very good for you.
Last week, I told you about a great nutritional book I read called, The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood. I learned a lot of great tips from this book, so I wanted to share a few more with you in the coming weeks. Here’s the first one:
“Feed your family a good-carb diet, not a low-carb diet.”
Healthy Carbs: Contain Fiber and Protein
- fruits
- legumes
- nut butters
- soy foods
- veggies
- whole grains
- yogurt
Junky Carbs: Contain Little or No Fiber or Protein
- candy
- cereals with fewer than 3 grams of protein and fiber
- chips
- desserts
- high-fructose corn syrup
- sweetened beverages
- white bread and pasta
A friend of mine told me that if you just shop the perimeter of the grocery store, you’ll make healthy choices. Think about what’s on the perimeter, dairy, meats, fruits, veggies, nuts and whole grain breads (no candy, cookies or crackers). Give it a try!
