Beware of Strangers!!!

box artHow do we keep our kids safe without scaring them? How do we explain to our kids that we are all God’s children and that most people have good hearts, but that, unfortunately, there are some bad people out there that we have to protect them from?

It’s this type of stuff that makes our job as parents a real challenge. Anyone can change a diaper, but there really should be parent training classes for handling all the “big talks” we have with our children. And then there are all the follow-up questions. I think I might have the two most inquisitive children on the planet. It’s one thing for me to mentally prepare for how I’m going to explain something to them, but I’m never prepared for the multitude of questions they hit me with. And, the questions will go on for days after the discussion.

So, our latest discussion was the safety talk. Luckily a friend of mine told me about a video called Stranger Safety. It was co-created by John Walsh and Julie Clark (the Baby Einstein mom) and it’s very age-appropriate. It covers off on almost every situation that a child might encounter. It’s hosted by “Safe Side Superchick,” and is very silly. Actually, almost too silly for my daughter, but my son really enjoyed the silliness!

It’s an Emmy Award-winning show and it differentiates between how children should handle and beware of dangerous situations with people they don’t know and also people they kind of know.

It’s a great way to kick-off safety discussions with your children. There are also additional programs and tools available at www.thesafeside.com.
