SharpMom TV Review

So, first of all, what’s up with Grey’s Anatomy? Are they really going to let Meredith (Grey of Grey’s Anatomy) die? And, if so, why not at the end of the season? What a huge cliff-hanger for mid season. February sweeps, I guess.
I can’t believe she’d be off the show, but I’d like to see how they pull this off. She had to have been under water for at least 10 minutes and then she never started breathing for the entire ambulance ride? I’ll be sure to tune in right at 8:00 pm CST next Thursday night! No TiVo for this!
In other TV news, I saw a story on E! News called, Studio 60 Fading to Black?, stating that next Monday NBC will be replacing Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip with The Black Donnellys, an organized crime drama. What a bummer! I really enjoyed watching Studio 60. I had no idea ratings for the show were continually dropping. As of now, no return date has been set for the program, but I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed.
If you’ve never watched Studio 60, it’s a drama based on the drama that goes on behind-the-scenes at a Saturday Night Live-type comedy show. The cast includes Matthew Perry, Bradley Whitford and Amanda Peet. I’m a big Matthew Perry fan and I love him in this role. So, we’ll have to see what happens.
And, finally, my favorite new show (well new for me as of a month ago) is 30 Rock. It’s so funny! It’s hard to find a really funny sitcom and I’m really enjoying 30 Rock. Tina Fey is so funny. It makes me wonder why she couldn’t bring that humor to Saturday Night Live last year. I also love Jane Krakowski, she’s hilarious on the show. And, I even am enjoying Alec Baldwin (and I’m not such a big Alec Baldwin fan).

Beware of Strangers!!!
February 14, 2007
How do we keep our kids safe without scaring them? How do we explain to our kids that we are all God’s children and that most people have good hearts, but that, unfortunately, there are some bad people out there that we have to protect them from?
It’s this type of stuff that makes our job as parents a real challenge. Anyone can change a diaper, but there really should be parent training classes for handling all the “big talks” we have with our children. And then there are all the follow-up questions. I think I might have the two most inquisitive children on the planet. It’s one thing for me to mentally prepare for how I’m going to explain something to them, but I’m never prepared for the multitude of questions they hit me with. And, the questions will go on for days after the discussion.
So, our latest discussion was the safety talk. Luckily a friend of mine told me about a video called Stranger Safety. It was co-created by John Walsh and Julie Clark (the Baby Einstein mom) and it’s very age-appropriate. It covers off on almost every situation that a child might encounter. It’s hosted by “Safe Side Superchick,” and is very silly. Actually, almost too silly for my daughter, but my son really enjoyed the silliness!
It’s an Emmy Award-winning show and it differentiates between how children should handle and beware of dangerous situations with people they don’t know and also people they kind of know.
It’s a great way to kick-off safety discussions with your children. There are also additional programs and tools available at www.thesafeside.com.
Dear John (Fireside Book Review)
February 13, 2007
Dear John is Nicholas Sparks’ latest novel. As you know, I’ve read all of Sparks’ books and I have my favorites, and now Dear John is one of them.
It’s a touching story of young love that lasts a lifetime. John Tyree first met the love of his life, Savannah Curtis, on the beach in North Carolina. John was at home visiting his father while on a short leave from the military. Savannah was in town with some of her peers working on a Habitat for Humanity project.
From the beginning, theirs was a powerful bond always separated by time and distance. John had his obligations to the military and Savannah, a college student, had her obligations to her education.
The two remained very committed to each other, despite their distance, until the unexpected events of September 11th changed everything, not only for the world, but also for this young couple’s future.
A novel like this makes you wonder about all the people who pass through our lives and how often a single incident can change fate forever. It’s a very touching and sweet novel. And, you might want to have some tissue nearby!!
Let us know your thoughts on Dear John if you’ve read it.
