I’m Not Julia Roberts (Fireside Book Review)
January 10, 2007
I just finished reading I’m Not Julia Roberts, by Laura Ruby. When I first saw this book, the title really intrigued me. It’s actually not referring to the actress Julia Roberts, but rather the role Julia Roberts played in the movie Stepmom. Interesting naming logic, but I suspect the idea was to indeed create a unique, intriguing title and it obviously worked on me!
The book is about the interwoven lives of several families blended from divorce. There’s actually a “family tree” at the beginning of the book showing the connection of the various characters. And, I’ll admit, I found myself referring to it several times! It was a little confusing to keep everyone straight at first.
I don’t have much experience with divorce, stepchildren, etc. and I found the book a little depressing at first. I was quickly thankful that I was raising my own crazy preschool son rather than someone else’s 16-year-old that came with baggage! But, the book turned out to be pretty funny. I especially think those of you who are dealing with ex-husbands and stepchildren would get a real kick out of it.
I really enjoyed one of the main characters, Lu Klein. She’s the one who’s “Not Julia Roberts.” She married Ward, a divorced man with three sons. Of course Lu had no idea what this really meant for her– that she’d be helping raise these boys, get no respect from them and have to constantly deal with their mother, Ward’s ex-wife Beatrix. My favorite chapter of the book is called “Dear Psycho.” It’s a series of written exchanges between Beatrix and Ward that take place over the course of five years! Let’s just say had Lu known about Beatrix’s love for letter writing, she probably would have never married Ward!
Cute book and a fairly easy read (once you figure out who’s who!). Let us know if you pick up a copy. I’d love to hear your review!
And The Golden Globe Goes To… (New Poll)
January 9, 2007
I thought it would be fun if we did some of our own award show voting as we prepare for the upcoming Golden Globes, Screen Actor’s Guild and Academy Awards.
For our latest poll, we are looking at the Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. Who would you give the Golden Globe to?
- Borat
- The Devil Wears Prada
- Dreamgirls
- Little Miss Sunshine
- Thank You For Smoking
(These are the actual Golden Globe nominations for this category.)
I didn’t see Borat and really wasn’t planning to… If you saw it and have a great review, let us know and maybe you’ll change my mind. I loved The Devil Wears Prada, but it doesn’t seem award worthy to me. Little Miss Sunshine was great and definetly award worthy, but I think Dreamgirls deserves it more. And, I can say this, since I saw them both! Didn’t see Thank You For Smoking, but my sister said it was great. I saw that it’s on Pay Per View, so I may try to catch it this week.
Don’t let my opinions sway you. Please vote in the new SharpMom poll for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical and we’ll see how our votes stack up on Monday, January 15th when the Golden Globes air live at 8/7c on NBC!
What Do You Do for New Year’s Eve? (Poll Results)
January 8, 2007
Well, everyone has been busy with the holidays, so we didn’t get a lot of responses to our last poll question: What do you do for New Year’s Eve?
But, from the responses we did get, it’s pretty clear that my SharpMoms are not the party all night types! But really, who can manage that lifestyle plus a house and kids?
Here are the highly scientific results:
- Hang out with family: 67%
- Stay home: 33%
- Party all night with friends!: 0%
- Go on vacation: 0%
I think they speak for themselves! Watch out for our new poll coming later this week!
