Mommys Have Time for Makeup Too!

January 12, 2007

Mineral Shimmering PowderAs you know, I love to share my favorite things with my SharpMoms. And,as SharpMom.com continues to grow, people are now even sending me stuff to try out (I feel like Oprah!). But, as I tell everyone,I have to keep it real. So, I personally try or check out everything I receive and/or hear about and only pass the best onto you!

Today, we’re talking about my latest discovery, Mommy Makeup, “designed for chic Moms on-the-go!” Mommy Makeup is a makeup kit that allows you to do your entire face with only a few products. And, for those moms that really need help, the kit even comes with a “Paint by Number Instructions & Face Chart.” It’s really fool proof!

Each kit comes in a range of five shades, from light to dark. And, my favorite part is you can choose from a Pretty-n-Polished or a Clean-n-Casual look. I tried both kits in the “Light Medium” color family. I personally preferred Pretty-n-Polished. I get fair in the winter and I need some extra color. The Clean-n-Casual kit gave me a nice glow, but it wasn’t quite enough for me. Read more

I’m Not Julia Roberts (Fireside Book Review)

January 10, 2007

book coverI just finished reading I’m Not Julia Roberts, by Laura Ruby. When I first saw this book, the title really intrigued me. It’s actually not referring to the actress Julia Roberts, but rather the role Julia Roberts played in the movie Stepmom. Interesting naming logic, but I suspect the idea was to indeed create a unique, intriguing title and it obviously worked on me!

The book is about the interwoven lives of several families blended from divorce. There’s actually a “family tree” at the beginning of the book showing the connection of the various characters. And, I’ll admit, I found myself referring to it several times! It was a little confusing to keep everyone straight at first.

I don’t have much experience with divorce, stepchildren, etc. and I found the book a little depressing at first. I was quickly thankful that I was raising my own crazy preschool son rather than someone else’s 16-year-old that came with baggage! But, the book turned out to be pretty funny. I especially think those of you who are dealing with ex-husbands and stepchildren would get a real kick out of it.

I really enjoyed one of the main characters, Lu Klein. She’s the one who’s “Not Julia Roberts.” She married Ward, a divorced man with three sons. Of course Lu had no idea what this really meant for her– that she’d be helping raise these boys, get no respect from them and have to constantly deal with their mother, Ward’s ex-wife Beatrix. My favorite chapter of the book is called “Dear Psycho.” It’s a series of written exchanges between Beatrix and Ward that take place over the course of five years! Let’s just say had Lu known about Beatrix’s love for letter writing, she probably would have never married Ward!

Cute book and a fairly easy read (once you figure out who’s who!). Let us know if you pick up a copy. I’d love to hear your review!
