Dieting? Watch out for these Fake Diet Foods

January 25, 2007

ice creamTrying to diet or just eat better? Be sure to read your labels. A lot of products that are claiming to be lite, lo-cal or diet really aren’t healthy at all. I’ve also noticed that you really have to watch out for whole grain or wheat claims. If the ingredient list starts with “enriched…” it isn’t really whole grain.

Hungry Girl gives a great list of foods to beware of in her article “Little Light Lies. . .”

  • Cold Stone Creamery Cake Batter Light Ice Cream (51 carbs!)
  • Litehouse Lite Honey Dijon Vinaigrette Dressing (13 grams of fat!)
  • Arby’s Market Fresh Santa Fe Salad (41 grams of carbs!)
  • Haagen-Dazs Cookie Dough Lite Ice Cream (30 grams of sugar!)
  • Ruby Tuesday Smart Eating Chicken Portabella (519 calories!)
  • Buitoni Light Alfredo Sauce (6 grams of fat!)
  • Smoothie King Slim-N-Trim Strawberry Smoothie (79 grams of carbs!!!!!)

Okay, who wouldn’t diet non-stop if all these foods were really healthy. They just sounds too good to be true and turns out, they are!

Organizing Small Spaces

January 23, 2007

Downsizing to our temporary housing has been challenging. We cut our square footage in half, lost our office, our game room and a few other rooms. But, I have the say the worst part is the downsized closets (especially the master closet).

Let me give you a visual: my husband and I can’t both fit in our closet at the same time. It’s so tiny. It would be tiny if only my clothes were in it and we’re sharing it! So, I’ve learned a few tricks to help make the most of my very tight space.

  • Sort your clothing: I’m usually running around with my kids, so my favorite casual clothes and jeans are all in the front of the closet within easy reach. In fact, I can get to a few key pieces without even entering the closet. My nicer clothes for church, evening outings, etc. are further back, since I don’t have to get to them as often.
  • Simplify your accessories: I pulled out the shoes, belts and purses I use most and then boxed the rest up on the shelves.
  • Under bed storage cartons: These are great and really easy to get to. I bought a long “sweater” container and the lid flips up from both ends. I can easily store about 12 sweaters in it (six on each side).
  • Steal closet space from your children!: I had to “borrow” my daughter’s top rod for my Summer clothes. (She can’t reach it anyways!)

Speaking of children’s closets, I actually took the opposite approach in my son’s closet. Since he doesn’t select his own clothes each day, I used the upper rods for all his clothes, which gave us lots of floor space for toys, since we lost our gameroom!

Whenever I get really claustrophobic, I just go visit my new house (which is under construction) and stand in my soon to be closet. What a joy it’s going to be! I’ll probably have to buy new clothes just to fill it up!

Five Things Your Wardrobe Needs (Tip of the Week)

January 22, 2007

This Tip of the Week comes from SheFinds.com, a great shopping site I recently discovered.

According to SheFinds, there are 5 essential pieces we need to tie our wardrobes together.

And they are…

  • Stylish blazer
  • Tan shoes
  • Crisp white shirt
  • Statement handbag
  • Large Wrap Scarf

This is a great list. Blazers are still so popular and give you such a chic, stylish look.

Okay, I just started wearing tan shoes a couple of years ago and now I can’t live without them. They are great because they go with black, brown, denim, white and more! Really the most versatile color of shoes you could own.

Everyone needs a least one crisp white shirt and it should be replaced each year, because no matter how you care for them, they don’t stay crisp and white forever!

Last Fall I purchased my first Kathy Van Zeeland bag. It was just over $100 and I’m not kidding hardly a day goes by that I don’t get a compliment on that bag. A great bag is definitely worth it, trust me!

I think a large wrap scarf is great. I gave some of my girlfriends fun scarves for Christmas this year.

Keep these tips in mind when you start your Spring shopping!
