You’re Not the Boss of Me (Fireside Book Review)
January 30, 2007
My friend gave me this book, You’re Not the Boss of Me, by Erika Schickel, for Christmas. She said she thought it looked hilarious and she’s anxiously awaiting her turn to read it! Well, hilarious it was and brutally, brutally honest. The book is about the adventures of a modern mom from the eyes of Erika, a mom of two daughters.
The first chapter of the book, The Obstetrical Dilema, is a must read for all pregnant women. But then pregnant women should put this book down because the rest will terrify them (if they are pregnant with their first child). This is my favorite line where Schickel talks about pregnancy week by week:
“Week 1 - The embryo is the size of the head of a pin… Week 18 - The baby is now the size of an open hand… Week 25 - Your baby is now the size of a crock pot.” Read more
A “Smart” Children’s Video (Tip of the Week)
January 29, 2007
I always feel guilty when I hear parents say how their children don’t watch any TV. I love TV, so it’s really only natural that my children would too! I definetly set limits and monitor what they are watching, but they are learning from TV. The best example is actually a DVD from Leap Frog called Letter Factory.
My sister-in-law told me about this DVD last year. I started having my son watch it (when he was 3) and then discovered that my daughter was watching it at Kindergarten! My 3-year-old niece has a copy too. And, all of these kids, under 4-years-old, have learned their letters and sounds.
It’s a really cute video and a great learning tool too. We also have Talking Word Factory, which my kids enjoy. Leap Frog makes a few others too that didn’t get as good of ratings online, so I’ve never checked them out. Let us know if you have!
