Know Your Carbs (Tip of the Week)

November 6, 2006

breadI’ve never been a fan of the no-carb diets and that’s because not all carbs are bad for you. In fact, some carbs, like fruits, are very good for you.

Last week, I told you about a great nutritional book I read called, The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood. I learned a lot of great tips from this book, so I wanted to share a few more with you in the coming weeks. Here’s the first one:

“Feed your family a good-carb diet, not a low-carb diet.”

Healthy Carbs: Contain Fiber and Protein

  • fruits
  • legumes
  • nut butters
  • soy foods
  • veggies
  • whole grains
  • yogurt

Junky Carbs: Contain Little or No Fiber or Protein

  • candy
  • cereals with fewer than 3 grams of protein and fiber
  • chips
  • desserts
  • high-fructose corn syrup
  • sweetened beverages
  • white bread and pasta

A friend of mine told me that if you just shop the perimeter of the grocery store, you’ll make healthy choices. Think about what’s on the perimeter, dairy, meats, fruits, veggies, nuts and whole grain breads (no candy, cookies or crackers). Give it a try!

Everyone Needs a Great Pair of Jeans

November 3, 2006

This is something we can all agree on, so why not wear the “hottest pair?” I saw a list earlier this week on the buzz log called “30 Pairs of the Hottest Jeans.” Coming it at #1, Seven Jeans. I have one pair of Seven Jeans that I love and here’s why, they don’t stretch out as you wear them. I can wear them more than once and they look just as good as the first time I put them on. They wash great and just wear really, really well.

I also own several pairs of Gap and Express jeans which also made the list at #29 and #22 respectively. These brands are much less expensive than Seven Jeans and they are great for casual wear, but there’s no way I can wear them twice.

Check out the full list and give us some scoop on your favorites.
