How Many Calories Did I Just Burn?
September 22, 2006
Check out this tool on Yahoo! Health that calculates the number of calories you burn for a specific activity based on your weight, the activity and the duration of activity. It’s super easy to use, and according to the calculator, I just burned 16 calories writing this post!
As we all know, if you want to loose weight you have to cut calories. You can do that by eating less or burning more. I like burning more better than eating less, but that’s just me.
As I was looking around on the Yahoo! Health site, I found some other health tips that you might want to check out like 5 Reasons to Walk and Supermarket Sweep.
I’m off to grab a gummie bear (technically, I already burned it off writing this post!).
How Much Sleep Do Kids Need?
September 21, 2006
My 1st grade daughter told me that a boy in her class fell asleep and the teacher couldn’t wake him up. She says he slept for two full hours. Stories like this crack me up (yet scare me too!). I’m never quite sure of the level of accuracy.
This situation happened on a Monday, so I was thinking that this poor boy probably didn’t get enough sleep and was too busy over the weekend. It got me wondering, how much sleep do kids need, so they can make it through the day at school.
I found an article on KidsHealth.org with some useful information. Here’s a quick run down, and you can read the entire article for more details that pertain to your child’s age.
- 0-6 months: 16-20 hours per day, but not all at once, of course!
- 6-12 months: About 3 hours during the day and 11 hours at night.
- 1-3 years: 10-13 hours; naps optional.
- Preschoolers: 10-12 hours per night; most will outgrow naps.
- School-Age Children: Kids 6-9 need about 10 hours per night.
- Preteens: Children ages 10-12 need just over 9 hours per night.
- Teens: 8-9.5 hours per night (but most don’t get enough).
Make sure yours kids are getting enough sleep, so they can be “sharp”at school!
