Mommy Needs A Play Date!
September 29, 2006
Becoming a new mom is a full time job. And, I’m here to tell you, as the kids grow up, the job doesn’t get any easier or any less demanding. You might start getting a little more sleep though!
As all us moms know, we do get back what we put into the job. It might not be a paycheck, but smiles, hugs and kisses are worth a lot more!
The most important thing for any mom, but especially a new mom, is finding some time for mommy. This “time out” for mom, just might enable you to survive the rest of the day with a pleasant look on your face.
Mommy needs play dates too! Here are a couple of ways to make that happen:
- New Mommy? Okay, you don’t have much time on your hands, but how about a 15 minute hot bath and a mindless magazine? Trust me; the laundry will still be there when you are done.
- Toddler Mommy? You are busy running after speedy tots, but they can survive without you for a couple of hours. Schedule lunch with a friend, go see a movie or just go shopping. Can’t afford a sitter? Swap babysitting hours with a friend, ask grandma for help or check into a mother’s day out program.
- Experienced Mommy? Your kids are busy with school, so you can consider taking on a real hobby. Tennis, yoga or maybe photography classes. The sky’s the limit.
Of course, your children need you, but they need you to be your best. Everyone needs a break and it will make you a better mom if you take some time for you.
The hot bath is running. I gotta go!
When Bite-Sized is Too Big
September 28, 2006
I remember when my children outgrew baby food in a jar, but they certainly weren’t ready for a sandwich yet. I would walk the aisles of the grocery store looking for ideas on what I could easily feed them in mini size. I never really found the answer. Let’s just say we ate more than our fair share of Cheerios, and I was really thrilled the day I discovered that frozen broccoli came in “pieces and florets.” That saved a lot of chopping.
Last night, I was looking at the October issue of Parents magazine and there was a 4-page spread (on pages 160-163) with pictures of 52 nutritious and delicious finger foods for babies.
A picture really is worth a thousand words and this one was full of inspiration. If you have a child under the age of two, go buy this magazine. The article is called, “Fabulous Finger Foods.” It will save you hours of wandering aimlessly through the grocery store!
Here are my five favorite ideas (that I never thought of for my children):
- tiny chunks of turkey meatballs
- mini rice cakes
- diced kiwi
- grated or shaved apple
- chopped hard-boiled egg (after 12 months)
It’s really important to offer a wide variety of healthy choices starting at an early age and this list is the best and most inclusive I’ve seen. And, it has pictures! Did I mention that?
