Saving for College? Check out these dorm prices.

August 18, 2006

My children are still pretty young, but we are already saving for college. The financial advisor tells us that my $40K education will cost over $100K each for my kids. And, that’s at a state school! I understand that a 4-year private college education will run over $300K by the time my kids reach 18.

The good news is I still have about 12 more years to save up.  Some of my readers, however, probably have less time, so I thought you might want to read this article I found on America’s Priciest Dorms. If any of these are on your child’s short list, maybe you can discreetly erase them!

There’s a lot of interesting information in the article, but in case you are pressed for time, here’s the 10 Priciest Dorms in the U.S.

  • University of California-Berkeley
  • Suffolk University
  • Marymount Manhattan College
  • Sarah Lawrence College
  • Drexel University
  • University of California Los Angeles
  • New York University
  • Eugene Lang College, The New School for Liberal Arts
  • University of California Santa Cruz

Now, you’ll notice most of these happen to be located in high rent areas to begin with. So, don’t give up hope, if you start saving early you can still afford college!

Record Life’s Precious Moments (Motherhood & The Art of Organization, Part IV)

journal

This is the fourth and final post in the Motherhood & The Art of Organization series. Last week, we focused on The Best Laid Plans Often Go Astray. Now that we all understand the importance of flexibility in our daily agenda, let’s talk about how to take time and record and organize all the wonderful memories we make with our families each day.

By this point, you know I’m all about organization. But, we have to make sure we are still taking time to stop and smell the roses. We still need to operate like families, not robots. We live in a hectic, fast paced society. We don’t want to become so list and schedule driven that life just passes us by.

Here’s how to make sure you Record Life’s Precious Moments:

  • Get a journal: They come in many forms: everything from the traditional diary, the baby book, the trendy journal or even just a spiral. The important thing here is that you record some memories on paper. You think you’ll never forgot the way your little one asked for “more nilk pease“or the day he first said his ABCs, but the fact is, you will! So, write it down. A great way to do this is to take 10 minutes each night before you go to sleep and jot down some notes. If everyday is completely out of the question, then maybe try for once a week. Read more
