Some Good Advice
July 19, 2006
Here’s some good advice on something every home should have, a First-aid Kit. But, actually, you need a couple–one for at home and one for the car and be sure one of them goes with you when you travel.
I recently bought a couple for under $15 each at my local pharmacy, but you can easily create one on your own. The attached article provides a great list of everything your kit needs to include. Here are a few key things to remember:
- sterile gauze
- adhesive tape and bandages
- antiseptic wipes
- antibiotic cream
- acetaminophen
- tweezers

I saw first hand how helpful a handy first aid kit can be at my friend’s neighborhood pool the other day when a toddler got stung. A mom at the pool had her kit handy and several of the above mentioned items were put to use. Five minutes later, the toddler was swimming again!
Wardrobe Rx (Accessories, Part III)
July 18, 2006

Now for the fun part! You have the basics; you have some stuff for the weekend, so now you need to add life and personality to it all. You need to accessorize!
If you stick with classic clothing pieces and put your money into trendy accessories, you’ll spend less and always be in style.
Here are the accessories you’ll need:
- Great bag - This doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Oversized purses are in right now and that’s great for moms. Pick a color and fabric that will work with all you “basics.”
- Trendy belt - Skinny ones, wide ones and everything in between. Pick something fun to create a new look for a basic outfit.
- Evening purse - Cute and small! Have some fun with this one. This can give personality to your little black dress.
- Classic pumps - This is an easy one. You’ll wear them with your classic suit, your black dress pants, your little black dress, etc. Go for a least a 2 inch heel.
- Fun jewelry - Wooden, beaded, there is so much to pick from. Select a necklace, bracelet and earrings that coordinate and can be mixed and matched. (Hint: This can really spice up the crisp white shirt.)
- Ballet flats - Very in style right now. Comfortable and will work great with casual pants and skirts.
- Open toe strapy sandals - These can dress up your black pants or your sundress. It’s okay to wear them in the winter, just paint your toes first!
- Coat/jacket - If your budget allows, one long coat and one jacket is best. Base the fabric and style on your climate. But, the longer coat should work with your dressy pieces, i.e. black slacks, suit, black dress, etc. The jacket is for your jeans, casual pants and skirts, etc.
- Classic jewelry - Maybe some diamond earrings or a sting of pearls (and they don’t even have to be real, just classic). These will last you a lifetime and will dress up any outfit.
- Sweat suit - A must have for every soccer mom! Go for comfortable but stylish in a color that you’ll love to wear, because you’ll wear this a lot!
So here’s a quick example of how these accessories can make the outfit:
- Take your jeans and crisp white shirt. Okay, cute, you’ll fit in but you won’t really stand out and your personality won’t show. Now add a beaded necklace, bracelet and earrings, wide, trendy belt, strapy open toe sandals, cute jacket and throw that great bag over your shoulder. Wow! Now that’s an outfit people will notice!
Go do some shopping and then try adding the pieces above. I think you’ll love the results!
Protect Your Child (Tip of the Week)
July 17, 2006
This week’s Tip, Protect Your Child, was sent to me by a SharpMom and it’s a great resource for parents.
You may not be aware, that you can download a tool that tracks child predators nationwide, maps them by neighborhood and alerts you automatically when new offenders register within a mile of your home.
The technology is free, easy to use and works really well.
My child’s elementary school actually sends home notes to the parents (unfortunately I got two this past school year) whenever a new offender moves into our area.
As I always tell my children, the world is full of many wonderful people, but, unfortunately, there are some not-so-wonderful people out there too. As parents, it is our duty and moral responsibility to protect our children. Check out the tool, it will send a chill down your back.
