What’s for Dinner? Twinkies?
June 30, 2006
Not sure what to make for dinner tonight? Check out The Twinkies Cookbook, which has 50 recipes, all with one ingredient in common–you guessed it, Twinkies. And, the recipes are not just desserts. Among them you’ll find Twinkie Lasagna, a Twinkie Burrito and the best one yet, Twinkie Sushi.
The cookbook is part of Twinkies’ 75th anniversary celebration. Recipes were collected from hundreds of people across the country and the top 50 made it into the cookbook.
Well, I’m off to the store. Gotta pick-up some garlic bread for that lasagna! I’m guessing this is a meal the kids will eat! And, highly nutritional I’m sure!
My Swim Advice: Lessons, Lessons, Lessons
June 29, 2006
This summer I signed my 3-year-old son up for the 5 day, intensive swimming lessons that guaranteed he’d be able to swim by week end.
I was beyond skeptical because he didn’t even want to be held in the pool a month ago. He cried through the entire week of lessons and I was always just one step away from pulling him out of the water and taking him home.
But, I didn’t and somehow he and his instructor pulled it off. She was so patient with him and never showed a “reaction” to his pleas to get out of the pool. This week he’s swimming about six feet and knows how to “monkey walk” to the steps.
It’s a step in the right direction and I recommend researching your area and finding a good instructor for your children. My best advice: be patient and don’t give in too quickly to natural fear. My son was able to overcome his fear and he’s so proud of what he’s accomplished. And most importantly, at least he has a chance of saving himself in the water.
Drowning Dangers
June 29, 2006
I was skimming through my July Parents magazine and there it was, the story that keeps us SharpMoms awake at night, “Drowning Dangers.” Every summer you hear the stories of the toddler that accidentally fell into the pool and it’s just heartwrenching.
Here’s the harsh reality: “About 800 children–the number of students on 11 full school buses–drown every year,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among children ages 1 to 3, and the second-leading cause among kids under 15.”
Read this article in full and make sure your friends read it. Swim safely this summer! (I believe the link to the full article will be live after July 1st.)
